Puxian Dongyue Temple Taoist temple. Located on the top of Baishan Mountain, two kilometers east of Puxian County in Shanxi Province. It is commonly known as “Baishan Temple” because of the abundance of cypress trees on the mountain, which are lush and green all year round. The year of its construction is unknown. It was destroyed in an earthquake at the beginning of the Yuan Dynasty and rebuilt in the fifth year of the Yanhu reign (1318). It was repaired and expanded many times during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The temple is grand in scale and complete in layout, consisting of more than 60 buildings, including the main entrance, Lingxiao Hall, Yue Building, Conference Hall, Xian Pavilion, Dongyue Palace Hall, Hushi Ancestral Hall, Holy Mother's Hall, Qingxu Pavilion, Watchtower, and surrounding corridors. The main building, Dongyue Palace Hall, is 5 bays wide and 5 bays deep, with a full perimeter of steps and a double-eaved hipped roof. Behind the temple, below the ground level, are 15 cave dwellings that make up the 18 levels of hell. Each level is decorated with statues, and there are more than 120 statues of the Five Emperor Gods, the Ten Courts of Hell, the Six Ministers of Hell, and imps. This is an important physical resource for studying Dongyue beliefs and the folk legend of hell in China, and it is a masterpiece of Ming Dynasty clay sculpture and painting.
