Sikong Mountain, also known as “Sikong Plain,” is located about 40 kilometers west of Yuexi County in Anhui Province. It is 227 meters high and faces Tianzhu Mountain in Qianshan County. According to legend, during the Warring States period, a man named Chun Yu, who was a lawyer, lived in seclusion on this mountain, which is why it was named Sikong. After the Jin Dynasty, Taoist temples were built here, and gradually it became a center of Taoist activity. During the Zhi De period of the Tang Dynasty (around 757), the great poet Li Bai once lived in hiding on this mountain, writing the poem “Reflections on Living in the Mountains” in which he wanted to escape the troubles of the world and live a Taoist life of “refining elixir and preserving purity.” Later generations built the “Taibai Study Hall” and carved the poem on the walls of the hall. At the end of the Southern Song Dynasty, the Song general Zhang Dexing contacted the Taoist community here and gathered troops to resist the Yuan Dynasty. The temple is now in ruins, with only the remains of the “Horse Washing Cave” and “Spear and Sword Cave” remaining. There are also numerous inscriptions by famous scholars from various dynasties all over the mountain.
