Since she was a child, Jinhua has been “neat and clean-cut, and does not eat meat or fish,” and is often busy twisting threads for a living. Time flies, the sun and the moon rotate, and in an instant, Jinhua is already a 17-year-old girl, but she just keeps on twisting threads as usual, and is unwilling to listen to others proposing marriage. This matter has caused her parents to worry about her. As Jinhua herself did not agree to the marriage proposal, the matchmaking failed many times. In the end, her parents had no choice but to force a marriage upon her.
On the day of her marriage, the Jin family on Jing'er Street began preparing to welcome guests early in the morning. Everyone, young and old, was busy bustling about, displaying the dowry, and everyone was overjoyed. The house was bustling with activity. Only Jinhua appeared to be as calm as usual, dressed as she always was. The family repeatedly urged her to get ready, but Jinhua always calmly told them to wait a little longer, as the auspicious hour had not yet arrived. After a while, they heard someone shouting outside the door, saying that the bridal sedan chair was about to arrive at the door. At that moment, Jinhua was seen holding a fire poker, twirling the thread she had twisted in her hands and throwing it into the air. She then followed the thread out the door and disappeared in an instant. The family and relatives were stunned and at a loss for words. After a flurry of shouting, the Jin family sent people to search for her.
Jin Hua's brother and several family members saw a piece of thread trailing on the ground, so they followed the thread, climbing mountains and crossing rivers, all the way to Qingshi Ridge, where they finally encountered Jin Hua. They saw Jin Hua sitting cross-legged on Qing Shi Ling, but they did not know that she was cultivating her spiritual energy and internal strength. They rushed up to her and shouted at the top of their voices, telling her to go home immediately. However, after shouting for a while, Jin Hua remained sitting there without moving. Her brother and family members were extremely worried and had no idea what to do. They were about to forcibly drag Jin Hua home. At that moment, Jinhua said to her brother, “I have become a nun and will cultivate immortality. This matter is set. Please go home and tell my parents. There is no need to force me.” When her brother heard that Jinhua wanted to become a nun, he was so angry that he could not help laughing. But there was no other way. After a while, he thought, “I'll make things difficult for Jinhua and force her to go home.” So he said to Jinhua, “If you can become an immortal, today you can stick the fire stick in the stone and make it grow leaves. We will not force you anymore, and you can go cultivate your immortality! If you don't have such ability, obediently go back with us, so that your parents don't have to worry about you all the time. After hearing this, Jinhua casually stuck the firewood stick into the green stone ridge. In no time, green buds appeared on the firewood stick, and it turned into a small pine tree with lush foliage. The miraculous change made the family members not know whether to admire and cheer for Jinhua or complain and take her back. In the end, when he left, his brother told his sister to take care of herself and gave her some comforting words, but he had to return home in a depressed mood. After he returned home and recounted what had happened, his parents were distressed to hear about their daughter and blamed their son for not bringing back Jinhua. Jinhua's brother went to Qingshi Ridge a second time, but he didn't see Jinhua's shadow again. Since then, people have called Qingshi Ridge “Shenshu Ridge”.
After resting at Greenstone Ridge, Jinhua set off again, walking along a large mountain ridge that led directly to the peak of Barbi. There was a cave on the rock of this peak, and she meditated in the cave. When Jinhua arrived here, she looked up at the sky, which was a vast expanse of blue; looking back at her home, she saw a sea of clouds at the foot of the mountain. Suddenly, she couldn't help but feel a pang in her heart, and tears fell to the ground, where they turned into a clear spring. Later generations called this spring the “Barbi Pool”. The water is so clear that you can see the bottom. People who worshiped the gods on the mountain would drink the water from the pool, which was said to keep them healthy.
On the eighth day of the fourth lunar month in the third year of the Yongle reign (1405), Jin Hua sat in meditation and attained enlightenment in the cave on Barbi Mountain. According to another legend, after Jinhua attained enlightenment, baqi (wild cereals) grew all over the mountain. In the past, when the local area suffered from drought and crops failed, the people came from all directions to harvest baqi. The local people passed on that baqi was bestowed by the immortal nun to feed the villagers during the famine. Since then, people have called this mountain “Baqi Mountain”.
In the fourth year of the Ming dynasty (1468), Jinhua Temples were built successively in Shenshu Ridge, Bayi Mountain, and Lanzhou Jing'er Street. People's faith in Jinhua was sincere. As time passed, local believers respectfully called Jinhua the Goddess, also known as Jinhua Xiangu. Every year, the Goddess had to return to her hometown in Jing'er Street. The sedan chair started from Bayi Mountain, passed through Shenshu Ridge for a rest, and then arrived in Lanzhou Jing'er Street. During this period, people burning incense and praying along the way do not disperse for several days. This kind of folk belief has been maintained for hundreds of years and is still continuing.
Now, the Jinhua Xiangu Temple at Shenshu Ridge has been rebuilt and restored. Like the temples of Jinhua Xiangu at Baimi Mountain and Lanzhou, every year on the eighth day of the fourth lunar month and the seventh day of the seventh lunar month, believers flock to worship, and incense is burning vigorously.
