In Hanzhong there is a famous Taoist temple, the Zhang Liang Temple, which was built to worship the Taoist immortal Zhang Liang.
Zhang Liang (?–186 BC), style name Zifang, was from Han (now Henan and Shanxi). According to the Xuan Zhuan Taiyi, Zhang Liang met Huang Shigong and received the Book of the Yellow Emperor, which enabled him to be flexible and adapt to changing circumstances. He assisted Liu Bang, the first Han emperor, in unifying the country. Zhang Liang also used this to cultivate himself, and was able to refine his qi and become immortal. He was friends with Qi Li Ji, Dong Yuan Gong, Jiao Li Sheng, and Xia Huang Gong. He later revealed his form to the world and was buried in Longshouyuan. During the Red Eyebrows Rebellion, someone opened his tomb, but saw only the pillow of yellow stone, which flew away, leaving no trace of his corpse or clothing.
It is said that after Zhang Liang became immortal, he became the Taizhen boy and often accompanied Taishang Laojun in the Taqing. His grandson Zhang Daoling also attained immortality. According to the Chaoxian County Records, there is a Zifang Cave in the Baima Mountain of Chaoxian County. It is said to be the place where Zhang Liang practiced fasting and seclusion, and later generations built a shrine there and offer incense every year. The Tianshu Guan in Chen County (now southeast of Kaifeng in Henan Province) is also a place of worship, and during the Zhenghe reign (1111–1118) of the Song Dynasty, Zhang Liang was posthumously honored as Lingxu Zhenren.
