所谓万法归宗，这里指的是道教的全部教义和经教、科教、法派、教戒、炼养方法等都要归宗于信道修道，真思志道。

　凡为学道务道之士，无任是属哪个道派或擅长哪种教化，如言教、身教、科教等，其信仰追求和基本教义都应是一致的。从道派来说，道教有正一全真两大派，但两派的信仰体系和经教体系却都是一致的，皆以太上真常之道为最高信仰、宗奉三清道尊，并以三洞四辅真经宝典为经教之本。正一以真一不二，伐诛邪伪为内涵，全真倡积真功、践真行为本真，所要体现和倡导的都是太上之真道。而修炼虽有丹鼎符箓之分。但核心内容都是为度己度人。对一个道士来说，无任是正一还是全真，都应是心身与道法同修，不能偏废。三十代天师张继先曾说：此身身外本无法。也就是说，修炼道法，首先要修炼心身，积累道功，凝炼神气以合道，达到度己(修炼心身，合道成真)度人(以己之道功，济度他人)的目的。科教与教戒。教戒是为规范学道务道者言行以符合修道的要求，如三皈五戒：三皈要求道教徒皈依道经师三宝，以明确信仰；五戒，戒杀生以自娱、戒邪淫、戒偷盗、戒妄语、戒嗜酒，则都是为提高道德修养。科教则是要通过诵经斋醮，清静心神，使自我之心神与神明相亲，证悟道真。同时，也是宣扬道教教义，行教布化的重要形式。

The difference between science precepts and education  precepts: education precepts are used to regulate the words and deeds of those who have learned and understood the Dao in order to conform to the requirements of cultivation, such as the Three Refuges and Five Precepts: the Three Refuges require Taoists to swear allegiance to the Three Treasures of the Daoist scriptures in order to affirm their faith; the Five Precepts, which forbid killing and abstain from killing, sexual immorality, theft, lying, and alcoholism, all of which are for the purpose of improving moral cultivation; science precepts are to be achieved through chanting scriptures and fasting, purifying the mind, and allowing the self to be close to the gods and realize the truth of the Dao. At the same time, it is also an important form of propagating the teachings of Taoism and spreading the teachings.

　总之，道教所行的教法和形式，都是以“道”为核心宗旨的。作为道士。当以道德为务。龙虎山祖庭天师府中曾有联曰：道高龙虎伏，德重鬼神钦。
