Nine medicines 
Medicine is a mixture of remedies.
Guan Yin Zi said: Do not belittle trivial matters, for a small gap can sink a ship; do not belittle small things, for a small insect can poison the body; do not belittle petty people, for they can steal a country. One can accomplish great things by attending to small matters, can make great things by accumulating small things, and can befriend great people by befriending petty people. Heaven has no fixed rules, and people are incapable of fixing things. Only when you leave things and people behind, and focus on yourself, can you achieve anything. There is no such thing as the right time for anything, only the right attitude.
It is said: The wisest person knows that wisdom alone is not enough to deal with the world, and so they are wise in their humility. The most discerning person knows that discernment alone is not enough to understand the world, and so they are prudent in their reticence. The bravest person knows that bravery alone is not enough to overcome the world, and so they are timid in their fear.
It is said: Of all things in heaven and earth, there is not one that is mine. If things are not mine, I have to respond to them; if I am not myself, I have to nurture myself. Even if I respond to things, there is never any object; even if I nurture myself, there is never any self. Do not say external things, and then external me; do not say external form, and then external mind. The Dao is one and only, and cannot be ordered.
It is said that he who sees the tiniest things does not see the vastness of heaven and earth; and he who listens to the smallest sounds does not hear the thunder and lightning. He who sees the great does not see the small, he who sees the near does not see the far, and he who hears the great does not hear the small, he who hears the near does not hear the far. The sage sees nothing, and therefore sees everything; he hears nothing, and therefore hears everything.
It is said: “The eye cannot see its limits. One may love gold or jade, but this is to hold one color as the eye. One may love the sound of the bell or the drum, but this is to hold one sound as the ear. Only the sage does not crave it, does not reject it, and does not dwell on it.
It is said: ”The wise can follow the old and the ignorant can establish the foundation.
It is said: A crafty person can outwit a thief, and a brave person can outwit a tiger. He who can control himself can achieve self-fulfilment; he who can overcome things can benefit others; he who can forget the Way can attain the Way.
It is said: If you are inflexible, things will destroy you; if you are rigid, you will break. If your blade is sharp, things will destroy you. Sharpness will be worn down. The majestic phoenix is divine in its rarity, which is why the sage takes depth as his root; the musk deer leaves its fragrance without hunting, which is why the sage takes moderation as his rule.
It is said: A jar has two openings, which are filled with water. If one is blocked, the water does not come out, and if the lid does not rise, it does not fall. Even if the well is a thousand chi deep, if you draw the water with a bucket, the lid will not fall if it does not rise. This is why the sage does not anticipate things.
It is said: People make mistakes, and although they suffer the consequences afterwards, in time, they will second-guess themselves before they make a mistake. The only way to avoid mistakes is to not rely on one's own intelligence but to also use the intelligence of others, and to not be self-centered but to also consider the needs of others.
It is said: Customs differ between ancient and modern times, and customs also differ between the east and the west, the north and the south, and even within a family and among individuals. How could I be so narrow-minded as to force my way on future generations? Only follow the customs of the times, anticipate future events, give up anger and suppress desires, be tolerant of others and judge things by their importance.
It is natural, in tune with the divine and without boundaries.
It is said: Do not be ignorant, for the nature of the Way is to be happy and quick; do not be dim-witted, for the obscurity of the Way is to be happy and bright; do not be arrogant and easy, for the loftiness of the Way is to be happy and harmonious; do not be rambling and unfocused, for the expanse of the Way is to be happy and urgent; do not be gloomy and worried, for the silence of the Way is to be happy and at ease. The words of the ancients are full of learning, but they are also full of pitfalls, and they must be rescued.
It is said: one should not judge the world as being right or wrong, one should not belittle others while praising oneself, one should not take the Dao lightly, one should not slander one's virtues, and one should not despise one's talents.
It is said: the wisest person in the world is not wise, but foolish; the most eloquent person in the world is not eloquent, but taciturn; the bravest person in the world is not brave, but cowardly.
It is said: Heaven cannot make winter lotuses or spring chrysanthemums, which is why the sage does not go against the times. The earth cannot make Luo oranges or Wen raccoons, which is why the sage does not go against custom. The sage cannot make hands grasp, feet walk, or fingers point, which is why the sage does not go against what I am good at. The sage cannot make fish fly or birds gallop, which is why the sage does not go against what people are good at. If one is like this, one can move or stop, be obscure or bright, but one must not be constrained, and this is the way.
It is said: Those who speak little are not envied, those who walk little are not criticized, those who are wise little are not troubled, those who are capable little are not exploited.
It is said: Handle with sincerity, act with simplicity, treat with forgiveness, respond with silence, my way is endless.
It is said: Plan things, decide on principles, work on people, and let the heavens take care of the rest. Respect your teachers today, respect their teachings from the past, be like other people, but be true to yourself.
It is said: Gold and jade are hard to give up, but soil and stones are easy to discard. People who study the Dao, when they encounter subtle words and wonderful deeds, should be careful not to hold onto them.
It is said: People who are not clear about urgent matters, but engage in many other tasks and strange tasks, will be afflicted with poverty and disaster, and they will never know that everything is everywhere, and that they cannot abandon this for that.
It is said: The way of the world is to abandon the familiar for the unfamiliar, the essential for the superfluous, the virtuous for the foolish, the near for the far. This is acceptable for a while, but in the long term it will harm life.
It is said that those who discussed the Dao in the past either described it as still and silent, profound and deep, clear and unobstructed, empty and the same, or dark and obscure. Do not be frightened by this and retreat. The ultimate truth of the world is not in words or meaning. If you understand that it is not in the words or meaning but in the subtle words and profound meaning, then you will agree with me.

九药 
药者,杂治也。
关尹子曰:勿轻小事,小隙沈舟,勿轻小物,小虫毒身,勿轻小人,小人贼国。能周小事,然后能成大事,能积小物,然后能成大物,能善小人,然后能契大人。天既无可必者人,人无能必者事。惟去事离人,则我在我,惟可即可。未有当繁简可,当戒忍可,当勤惰可。
曰:智之极者,知智果不足以周物,故愚;辨之极者,知辨果不足以喻物,故讷;勇之极者,知勇果不足以胜物,故怯。
曰:天地万物,无一物是吾之物。物非我,物不得不应;我非我,我不得不养。虽应物,未尝有物;虽养我,未尝有我。勿曰外物,然后外我,勿曰外形,然后外心。道一而已,不可序进。
曰:谛毫末者,不见天地之大;审小音者,不闻雷霆之声。见大者亦不见小,见迩者亦不见远,闻大者亦不闻小,闻迩者亦不闻远。圣人无所见,故能无不见,无所闻,故能无不闻。
曰:目之所见,不知其几何,或爱金,或爱玉,是执一色为目也。耳之所闻,不知其几何,或爱钟,或爱鼓,是执一声为耳也。惟圣人不慕之,不拒之,不处之。
曰:善今者可以行古,善末者可以立本。
曰:狡胜贼,能捕贼,勇胜虎,能捕虎。能克己,乃能成己,能胜物,乃能利物,能忘道,乃能有道。
曰:坚,则物必毁之,刚斯折矣;刀利,则物必摧之。锐斯挫矣。威凤以难见为神,是以圣人以深为根;走麝以遗香不捕,是以圣人以约为纪。
曰:瓶存二窍,以水实之,倒泻闭一,则水不下,盖不升则不降。井虽千仞,汲之水上,盖不降则不升。是以圣人不先物。
曰:人之有失,虽己受害于已失之后,久之,窃议于未失之前。惟其不恃己聪明而兼人之聪明,惟其无我而兼天下之我,终身行之,可以不失。
曰:古今之俗不同,东西南北之俗又不同,至于一家一身之善又不同,吾岂执一豫格后世哉。惟随时同俗,先机后事,捐忿塞欲,简物恕人,权其轻重,而为之自然,合神不测,契道无方。
曰:有道交者,有德交者,有事交者。道交者,父子也,出于是非贤愚之外,故久德交者,则有是非贤愚矣。故或合或离,事交者合则离。
曰:勿以拙陋,曰道之质当乐敏捷;勿以愚暗,曰道之晦当乐轻明;勿以傲易,曰道之高当乐和同;勿以汗漫,曰道之广当乐要急;勿以幽忧,曰道之寂当乐悦豫。古人之言,学之多弊,不可不救。
曰:不可非世是己,不可卑人尊己,不可以轻忽道己,不可以讪谤德己,不可以鄙猥才己。
曰:困天下之智者不在智而在愚;穷天下之辩者不在辩而在讷;伏天下之勇者不在勇而在怯。
曰:天不能冬莲春菊,是以圣人不违时,地不能洛橘汶貉,是以圣人不违俗,圣人不能使手步足握,是以圣人不违我所长,圣人不能使鱼飞鸟驰,是以圣人不违人所长。夫如是者,可动可止,可晦可明,惟不可拘,所以为道。
曰:少言者,不为人所忌,少行者,不为人所短,少智者,不为人所劳,少能者,不为人所役。
曰:操之以诚,行之以简,待之以恕,应之以默,吾道不穷。
曰:谋之于事,断之于理,作之于人,成之于天。事师于今,理师于古,事同于人,道独于己。
曰:金玉难捐,土石易舍。学道之士,遇微言妙行,慎勿执之,是可为而不可执,若执之者,则腹心之疾,无药可疗。
曰:人不明于急务,而从事于多务他务奇务者,穷困灾厄及之,殊不知道无不在,不可舍此就彼。
曰:天下之理,舍亲就疏,舍本就末,舍贤就愚,舍近就远,可暂而已,久则害生。
曰:昔之论道者,或曰凝寂,或曰邃深,或曰澄澈,或曰空同,或曰晦冥,慎勿遇此而生怖退。天下至理,竟非言意。苟知非言非意在彼微言妙意之上,乃契吾说。
