真人曰:虽当服饵而不知养性之术,亦难以长生也。养性之道,不欲饱食便卧,及终日久坐,皆损寿也。人欲少劳,但莫大疲,及强所不堪耳。人食毕行步,踌蹰有所循为快也。故流水不腐,户枢不蠹,其劳动故也。人不可夜食,食毕但当行步,计使十数里往来,饱食即卧,生百病也。

夫欲快意任怀,自谓达识知命 , 不泥异正,极情肆力,不营持久者,闻此言虽风之过耳,电之经目,不足喻也。故身枯於流连之中,气绝於绮纨之间而甘心焉,亦安可告之以养性哉 ! 匪惟不纳,反谓妖讹也。而望彼信之,所谓明镜给於矇瞽,丝竹娱於聋夫者也。 《抱朴子》曰:一人之身,一国之象也。胸腹之位,犹宫室也;四支之列,犹郊境也;骨节之分,犹百官也;神,犹君也;血,犹臣也;气,犹民也。故能治民,则治国也。夫爱其民;所以安其国;爱其气;所以全其身。民散国亡,气竭人死。死者不可生也,亡者不可存也。是以至人消未起之患,治未病之病,医之於无事之前,不追之於既逝之後。民难养而易危,气难清而易浊,故审威德所以保社稷,割嗜欲所以固血气,然後真一存焉,三七守焉,百害却焉,年寿延焉。人年五十至於一百,美药勿离手,善言勿离口,乱想勿轻心。常以深心至诚,恭敬於物。慎勿诈善,以悦於人。
